| LORD BY JACOB'S WELL / FOUNTAIN. (JOHN 4) General Points: City of Sychar, previously known by the name of Shachem, signified in the internal sense first light from the Lord, thus by Sychar is signified interior truth. The well or fountain of Jacob means the fountain in the field given to Joseph by his father Jacob (Gen. 49). Divine Truth from the Lord issuing forth is meant by the fountain, so by the water from the Lord is meant Divine Truth. Samaritans, in general, are the Gentiles, who would receive Divine Truth from the Lord and the Samaritan woman is the church from them. Because Jacob's fountain signified the Word, the water signified truth, and Samaria the spiritual church, Lord teaches here that the doctrine of truth is from Him, and when it is from Him (or from His Word), it is the fountain springing up unto eternal life. Thus, the truth itself is the living water when it is received. Therefore, never thirsting means no longer failing the Lord. An additional point of interest in this story is that the Lord asks the woman to "Go call your husband and come back", when she asks Him for "this water". The Lord had created female to be a receptacle of good from Lord's love, while the male was created to be a receptacle of truth from Lord's wisdom created the female. Since the water in general, represents truth, the male is to be a receptacle of it, thus "go call your husband..."
